ANSWERS TO SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What do we fish for?
- Halibut is our most popular fishery. Several species rockfish are sometimes caught while halibut fishing.
- Lingcod season opens the 1st of July.
- We fish the first run of king salmon, mid-May through mid-June and silver salmon late July through August.
- Feeder kings throughout the year.
- Combination trips are available.
Where do we fish?
- Kachemak Bay and Lower Cook Inlet. We normally try to fish within 40 miles of Homer.
- Commonly we fish in waters 150' to 180'. On some of the larger tides we may fish in water as shallow as 30'.
How long will we be out?
- We leave Homer Small Boat Harbor (slip M-22) at 7:00AM and return by 5:00 PM. It is normally about a two hour boat ride out to the fishing grounds and two hours back, which leaves plenty of fishing time.
How many fish can I catch?
- The limit for halibut is two per day, four in possession
- Salmon limits vary depending on species and area fished.
- Lingcod opens July 1st, limit is two per day.
- Rockfish limits depend on the species.
- Catch and release is allowed as long as the fish is unharmed. Once a fish is brought into the boat it goes on your limit. We encourage you to keep only the fish you can realistically use.
- State law requires each person hook his or her own fish.
What is provided?
Experienced captain and deckhand to give you as much or as little assistance with your fishing as you need or want.
- Top quality fishing gear, bait, and the filleting of your fish. We fillet at sea so when you leave the boat your fish will be in bags ready to be processed; if it is more convenient for you we can have the processors pick your fish up at the boat. Derby contenders and lingcod will be taken care of on shore.
- A clean vessel (including bathroom!) with modern electronics.
What should I bring?
- Alaska fishing license (available at many Homer businesses)
- Warm clothes such as jackets, hats, gloves, sweatshirts (dress in layers)
- Rubber soled shoes (boots are best) and rain gear
- Camera
- Lunch and beverages
- Sun glasses and sun screen
Can I bring Children?
- We encourage children to fish and welcome children over the age of 12 when accompanied by an adult. We often take children younger than 12 as part of a party that has reserved the entire boat. When we have young children on board they are our first priority; their safety takes precedence.
Can you arrange lodging?
- Yes. We have several hotels, B & Bs, and campgrounds that we recommend. We will be happy to either put you in touch with them or make your reservations for you.
